Humour and laughter are far more than lighthearted moments in a child’s day - they are powerful tools that support emotional wellbeing, resilience, and healthy development. When children laugh, their bodies and brains shift into a state of connection and safety, creating the ideal conditions for learning, coping, and growing.
Laughter has a direct impact on the nervous system. It reduces stress hormones, boosts feelgood chemicals like endorphins, and helps children regulate their emotions more easily. For children who experience anxiety, frustration, or sensory overwhelm, even a small moment of shared humour can act like a reset button, easing tension and helping them return to a calmer, more grounded state.
Humour also strengthens relationships. When children share a silly moment with a parent, teacher, or peer, they experience connection, belonging, and trust. These microconnections build the foundation for secure relationships - a key protective factor for mental health. Shared laughter tells a child, “You’re safe with me. We can enjoy this moment together.” Over time, these experiences help children feel more confident, more understood, and more willing to seek support when they need it.
Cognitively, humour encourages flexible thinking. When children play with ideas, make jokes, or find the funny side of a situation, they practise perspective taking and creativity. These skills help them navigate challenges with greater ease. A child who can laugh at a mistake, for example, is less likely to feel overwhelmed by it and more likely to try again.
Importantly, humour can also be a gentle way to approach tricky emotions. Playful exaggeration, silly metaphors, or lighthearted storytelling can help children explore feelings that might otherwise feel too big or too scary. When used thoughtfully, humour becomes a bridge - making emotional conversations safer and more accessible.
Ultimately, laughter is a natural, joyful way for children to build resilience, strengthen relationships, and support their mental health. By creating environments where humour is welcomed and shared, we give children a powerful tool to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence and connection.
